What is a Boil Water Notice?
Important Safety & Information Guidance for Residence
Why Boil Water Notices Are Issued
Water pressure keeps pollutants from entering underground pipes that deliver drinking water. When pressure is lost, contaminants can enter the system, potentially allowing harmful bacteria or viruses into the water supply.
How to Safely Use Water During a Notice
Water used for consumption should be disinfected by bringing it to a rolling boil for at least one (1) minute. Bottled water may also be used as an alternative.
This Includes:
• Drinking water
• Brushing teeth
• Washing fruits and vegetables
• Making ice
• Preparing food or beverages
Water Safe for Other Uses
Tap water may still be used for showering, bathing, shaving, and washing, as long as care is taken not to swallow water or allow it into the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Business & Facility Guidance
Businesses should disable or post warnings at drinking fountains and ice machines. Bottled water should be used for customers and employees during the notice period.
After the Notice is Lifted
The notice will remain in effect until water quality tests confirm safety. Once lifted, residents should flush taps and discard any ice made during the notice.
